|Director: Stephen Frears||Country: UK/USA/France|
|Cast: Judi Dench, Steve Coogan||Production Year: 2013|
Judi Dench delivers another Oscar-worthy performance in this real life story based on the book by former BBC journalist Martin Sixsmith. In his finest screen performance to date Steve Coogan plays Sixsmith, a political writer recently sacked from his job, who is approached at a party and offered a chance to cover a different kind of story.
Philomena is an Irish woman now in her late 60s, who was forced to give up a child she had 50 years ago. While living at a convent for unmarried mothers, her child was given to an American couple, and she never saw him again. Sixsmith decides to take on Philomena’s story, and helps her track down the son she never knew.
“A gently powerful and absorbing film that will have audiences veering between tears and laughter.” Screen International
