Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata’s lovingly rendered, hand-drawn, animated adaptation of the Japanese folktale, The Tale Of The Bamboo-Cutter, has been eight years in the making.

A magical little girl is found by a humble wood-cutter in a glowing bamboo shoot. Like a bamboo shoot, she soon grows, leaving the idyllic countryside for a more regal life in the city. But there, the Princess finds herself longing for something else.

“Gorgeously beautiful in a way that words cannot do justice.” ★★★★ The Independent
