The profoundly moving story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan), a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn, torn between her homeland and her future.

Director John Crowley (Boy A, Intermission), adroitly balances tone and mood, combining the pristine romance of Pride and Prejudice with the nostalgic trappings of 1950s Americana. Nick Hornby’s stirring adaptation captures the poetic melancholy of Colm Tóibín’s novel. Ronan (Atonement, Hanna) is captivating as a mature young woman with a zest for life, while the inimitable Julie Walters stands out amongst the uniformly excellent cast, offering a delicious turn as Eilis’s Brooklyn landlady.

“With its combination of humor, heart-tugging and coming-of-age triumph, it could be one of this year’s most commercial films to emerge from Sundance.” Screen International

“Ronan absolutely nails the steely sense of self-preservation which makes Eilis certain she has to go, yet her effortlessly layered performance wraps it inside the unaffected homeyness of a sheltered country girl” Little White Lies
