Susan (Amy Adams) is a successful Los Angeles art-gallery owner who is happy living a simple life, yet she finds her paradise troubled by the frequent absence of her second husband (Arnie Hammer), a handsome doctor who travels a lot. Susan is rattled further when a manuscript, written by her former husband (Jake Gyllenhaal), arrives at her home.
She finds herself propelled into the fictional life of the main character, whose drive to his summer house with his family is about to turn into a nightmare. The deeper she gets into the script, the more she has to examine her own past.
