The film is set in Geiranger, a small town amidst a fjord in Norway. Geologist and father of two, Kristian (Kristoffer Joner), is about to move from his job at a local research office to work at an oil company, when seismic analysts in the research unit determine that a major rockslide from the volatile façade of Akerneset mountain above the fjord would be catastrophic, displacing so much water in the narrow bay that a tidal wave would result, wiping out Geiranger. Although anticipated, no one is really ready, when the 85 meter high wave hits the town, and residents are left with 10 minutes to find protection.
