This adaptation of Nikolai Leskov’s 1865 novella, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk District, moves the action to 19th century England as young bride, Katherine (Pugh), is sold into an arranged marriage to a much older and disinterested man. Initially lonely, housebound and bullied by her father-in-law (Fairbank), Katherine embarks upon a passionate and dangerous affair. Featuring an outstanding, nuanced performance from Florence Pugh, Katherine is young, petulant and seductive, going to increasingly shocking lengths to protect her newfound fulfilment and freedom.
