“I’m trying to understand why British women fall in love with men on death row. I’m corresponding with Jonny, incarcerated in Texas. I’m trying to understand the death penalty and how that fits into our 21st Century world. I’m trying not to be judgmental.”
In 2015 Stephanie Ridings began to explore women who fall in love with men on death row after watching a documentary featuring these relationships. Unable to understand their motivations, she began a period of research and writing which led to her exploring an extract of the piece at China Plate’s First Bite Festival. The Road to Huntsville challenges preconceptions about unconventional love and state homicide.
