Haydn Quartet in C Op.54 No.2
Pamela Harrison Clarinet Quintet
Brahms Clarinet Quintet in B minor Op.115
The heart has its reasons, and at the end of his life, Brahms fell so deeply in love with the clarinet that he came out of retirement to write for it. The result was the Clarinet Quintet: tender, songful, and haunted by the gypsy music of Brahms’ youth – truly, emotion recollected in tranquillity. It’s a beautiful complement to the Quintet by the post-war British composer Pamela Harrison; Haydn’s quartet, meanwhile, taps the same vein of understated passion.
