In this loose, dreamtime riff on Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Mike (Phoenix) is a narcoleptic hustler, whilst Scott (Reeves) is the rebellious son of a mayor, who is set to inherit a fortune. Together, they travel from Portland to Idaho, and finally to the coast of Italy, in a quest to find Mike’s estranged mother. From visionary director Gus Van Sant, My Own Private Idaho is an appealingly idiosyncratic, yet tender, story of unrequited love.
