Karin (Andersson) is a beautiful young Swedish woman who is, on the surface, content as a wife and mother, married to Andreas (von Sydow), a reserved surgeon. However, when David (Gould), an archaeologist from the United States arrives in the area, Karin becomes infatuated with his inherent sense of freedom from mundane life. As they embark on an affair the two must contend with the effects that the romance has on their lives in Bergman’s most complex analysis of human relationships.
