Music Director Kazuki Yamada presents a distinctly jazz flavoured selection.

An annual festive delight, Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker features some of the composers’ most memorable melodies. Sixty-eight years later, band leader Duke Ellington and arranger Billy Strayhorn reimagined nine Nutcracker pieces to create a swinging, playful holiday treat.

Originally written for Woody Herman in 1949, Leonard Bernstein’s triptych for solo clarinet and ensemble was premiered six years later and is dedicated to another figure from the big band era, Benny Goodman. A seamless marriage of baroque and jazz forms, it’s exuberant, wild, and unmistakably Bernstein.
