One of the most influential films in anime history, Satoshi Kon's legendary debut thriller is reborn in a stunning 4K restoration.

A uniquely talented director, Satoshi Kon’s mind-bending thriller was hailed as the first anime to feature an authentic psychological suspense story. Blurring the line between fantasy and reality, Perfect Blue follows Mima, a young woman who leaves her pop group to begin again as an actress. Before long, a string of murders begin to unfold, targeting those around her.

Our team is sharing the films they love so you can enjoy them on the big screen.

“If you are not obsessed, you simply don’t want it enough to succeed”.

In a world that glamorises the grind, working through exhaustion, and doing things that you don’t want to all in pursuit of success, it’s cathartic to see such obsession steadily lead to destruction.

Perfect Blue is a film you must watch once, ponder, and then watch again. The feelings in it are raw and relatable: the desire to be well-known, the desire for success, but most of all, the desire for none of those things considering the sacrifice. Providing the inspiration behind Black Swan, this movie questions the cost of perfection and constant performance. 90 minutes perfectly captures the experience of stepping back from something you loved before it consumed you, whether that’s academically, in a sport, a career, and so on. I love this film because watching it feels like being submerged in cold water: shocking, clarifying, and uncomfortable all at once.

You’ll leave with more questions than the film answers, but perhaps those answers lie within yourself (and maybe other Letterboxd reviews or YouTube video essays, as they did for me)!”
