HAYDN Trumpet Concerto

The CBSO return for a thrilling selection built around a Beethoven double-bill.

Though too often overshadowed by his other symphonies, Beethoven's Fourth may be his lightest, yet still has considerable power. Dating from the composers' 'middle period', it's playful and bright, with a stir of Haydn, and not without surprises.

Initially developed alongside the Fourth, Beethoven's iconic Fifth stands as one of the most important (and familiar) classical works of all time. From the four-note opening motif, it's majestic in nature, heroic and victorious.

Closing the night is Haydn's concerto with “trumpeter extraordinaire” (BBC Music Magazine), Matilda Lloyd.
