Warwick Arts Centre favourite Freddy Kempf returns as soloist to conclude our 2022-2023 orchestral season.

Estonian National Symphony Orchestra is led by Olari Elts who began his tenure as ENSO’s Music Director and Chief Conductor in 2020.

A varied programme includes Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.2, which marked the composer’s triumphant return to form after struggling with his mental health. Surprisingly, his Symphony No.1, which debuted in 1897, initially received a poor reception, but now the symphony is now seen as ground-breaking.

Around the performance nestles Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s elegy to mark the passing of Britten, a much-admired British giant who had passed away the previous year, and Thea Musgrave’s short 1990 piece honouring the 125th anniversary of Sibelius’ birth before Jean Sibelius’ own Symphony No.5

With its familiar ‘swan-call’ motif, Sibelius' Fifth was commissioned from the composer by the Finnish Government to honour his own 50th birthday in 1915.
