Kubrick went to extraordinary lengths to recreate the look of the period, using pioneering techniques to evoke the imagery of the era’s great visual stylists. The result is sublimely beautiful and a genuine masterpiece – a mournful, sardonic film about the pitilessness of the aristocracy and the caprice of fate.
