Arrested Development’s Will Arnett plays a stand-up comic facing divorce in Bradley Cooper’s bittersweet new comedy.

Co-written by Arnett and Cooper, Is This Thing On? is based on British comedian John Bishop’s early stand-up career. As their marriage unravels, Alex (Arnett) aims to grow in the New York comedy scene while Tess (Laura Dern) confronts the sacrifices she made for their family. Another tone switch in Cooper’s filmmaker career, his follow-up to the finely controlled Maestro finds him on loose, unfussy form, delivering a real charmer of a picture about the vicissitudes of middle age.
