A young girl finds her mother’s working-class background incompatible with her country-club lifestyle and Ivy-League aspirations, leading to a devastating emotional rift.

Whip smart, big-hearted Stella (a brilliant Barbara Stanwyck) reaches beyond her working-class upbringing and marries into wealth, only to find acceptance is far more elusive than money. As brash as the film is in its class critique, this story of a mother’s sacrifice for her beloved daughter has lost none of its tear-jerking power.
