Melding melodrama with screwball farce, Pedro Almodóvar’s unimpeachable 1988 black comedy is a classic of modern European cinema.

Starring Carmen Maura and Antonio Banderas, it’s the story of Pepa (Maura) who resolves to commit suicide after a breakup. Fortunately, she’s interrupted by a chaotic series of events – and a series of other characters who are also on the brink of emotional collapse. Exploring the volatility of romance and desire and the possibilities of personal liberation, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown is powered by Almodovar’s unique vision, wit and vibrant visual sense.

Our team is sharing the films they love so you can enjoy them on the big screen.

It’s always a delight to enjoy a sumptuously-shot Almodóvar film on the big screen, and this 1988 black comedy is an absolute highlight from his work in that decade:

“I love this film because it’s chaotic and absurd but also sincere..as a woman on the verge myself it makes more sense every time I watch it. I’ve never trusted gazpacho since! This was my introduction to Almodóvars’ bold colours, melodrama, and eccentric characters. ”
