Sarah Gavron’s spirited, highly acclaimed Rocks follows a teenage girl growing up in a multi-ethnic East London community.
Join us for a special screening of Sarah Gavron’s acclaimed film Rocks, a vibrant portrait of girlhood, care and community in East London. Performed by a cast of mostly non-professional actors, the film follows Rocks, a teenage girl who becomes the primary carer for her younger brother after her mother leaves. Full of energy, humour and the strength of female friendship, Rocks offers an intimate look at young people navigating their worlds with creativity and hope. All ticket sales include entry to the Afro dance workshop after the screening.
Curated by Dr Alice Pember as part of ‘Care Behind the Scenes’, this event celebrates the caring ethos at the heart of the film’s production and narrative and the music and dance sequences that create moments of connection and relief. Developed collaboratively between the filmmakers and the young cast, these scenes reveal how movement and music can become meaningful forms of care and expression..
Dance Workshop
We are delighted that the screening will be followed by an Afro dance workshop led by Patience J, the film’s lead choreographer and a key figure in Afro dance in the UK. Centred on Movement, Music and Care, the workshop invites participants of all ages and abilities to explore the expressive and communal power of dance, and is included in the ticket price.
Care Behind the Scenes
