Daniel Day-Lewis delivers his breakthrough performance in Stephen Frears’ delightfully transgressive My Beautiful Laundrette, back in cinemas for its 40th anniversary.
Working from a richly layered script by Hanif Kureishi, My Beautiful Laundrette is an uncommon love story. A young South London Pakistani man, Omar (Gordon Warnecke) decides to open an upscale laundromat to make his family proud. His childhood friend, skinhead Johnny (Day-Lewis) volunteers to help out. What results is a joyous culture-clash comedy and a subversive work of social realism that dared to address the racism, homophobia, and marginalisation of Thatcher-era England.
