The American Premieres of Shostakovich’s Wartime Symphonies
Join us ahead of the Concert Budapest Symphony Orchestra’s performance for a very special pre-concert talk. Professor Tim Lockley will delve into the US broadcast premieres of Shostakovich’s wartime symphonies, from the rush to be the first to conduct the Leningrad Symphony in 1942 to the unexpectedly light and joyous Symphony No.9, premiered by the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1946. The talk will sample audio from 1940s broadcasts and includes time for audience questions.
