Opera Warwick is proud to present Carl Maria von Weber's romantic opera The Marksman (Der Freischütz) in celebration of nearly 200 years since its first performance!

The opera follows the story of Max, a hopeless marksman, who wishes to win a shooting contest to earn Agnes’ hand in marriage. As he faces the prospect of losing Agnes, a cunning forester Caspar offers him a devilish proposal too good to refuse: seven magic bullets guaranteed to hit their mark, but with one important catch!

Weber’s opera was met with immediate success after its first performance in 1821, in most part for its incredible and innovative score combining lyrical, folkloric melodies with dark, suspenseful music. Der Freischütz is widely considered to be the first German Romantic opera, and in many ways a precursor to later operatic writings of composers such as Wagner, marking a turning point in the history of opera.

Join us for an unmissable evening to see University of Warwick's most talented singers, actors, and musicians perform!
