5 Cinema Highlights for January 2024
Join us in our screens this new year for all the anticipated nominees for this year’s top prizes at the BAFTAS and Oscars from true stories to fantasy fiction. Here are 5 of our January highlights:
Priscilla
Sofia Coppola’s (Marie Antoinette, The Virgin Suicides) Priscilla (From Fri 5 Jan) takes a fresh look at one of the most famous wives in rock-and-roll, Priscilla Presley, and the complexities around her relationship with The King, Elvis. With star turns from Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi as the iconic couple, Priscilla is the untold story of the great American myth that has gone down in music history.
Poor Things
Delving into the brilliant and the bizarre, Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite) tells the incredible tale of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life in Poor Things (From Fri 12 Jan). With a stellar cast featuring Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe, Poor Things is wild and spectacular as Bella seeks pleasure, equality, and liberation at the centre of its Frankenstein heart.
The Boy and the Heron
Studio Ghibli master Hayao Miyazaki returns with his final swansong The Boy and the Heron (From Fri 12 Jan). Beautiful and enigmatic, The Boy and the Heron weaves together Miyazaki’s past, present and future through the story of 12-year-old Mahito who struggles to settle in a new town after his mother's death.
The Holdovers
Packed with heart and authenticity, The Holdovers (From Fri 19 Jan) brings together an unlikely group led by a superb Paul Giamatti as a curmudgeonly teacher who is forced to supervise students who can’t return home for the Christmas holidays. Beautifully performed, The Holdovers will be one to watch as the nominees come in for Supporting Actor categories. A complete delight, and unmissable.
All of Us Strangers
Hauntingly beautiful, All of Us Strangers (From Fri 26 Jan) is a true ensemble piece featuring a small cast made up of acting heavy weights, Andrew Scott, Paul Mescal, Claire Foy and Jamie Bell. All of Us Strangers is a ghost story that illuminates the human condition through the exploration of love, grief, and loss. This film will sit with you for days afterwards.
