5 Cinema Highlights for November 2023
With the nights drawing in and the crispy weather upon us, it can only mean one thing, we’re on the road to Awards Season. November sees the release of some of the most critically acclaimed films that are hotly tipped to be nominated for cinema’s biggest accolades. Here are our 5 highlights:
How To Have Sex
Winner of Un Certain Regard Award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and nominated for 13 BIFAs (British Independent Film Awards), How To Have Sex (From Fri 3 Nov) is a stylish and highly acclaimed directorial debut from Molly Manning Walker. Following three teenage girls as they navigate consent, sex and friendship, How To Have Sex is a hedonistic trip that turns sour on a night out during their first girls' summer holiday abroad.
Anatomy Of A Fall
Anatomy Of A Fall (From Fri 10 Nov) added itself to a prestigious cinematic list this year as it took home the top award at Cannes Film Festival, the Palme d’Or. Words are wielded like weapons and shocking truths come to light in this ferociously intelligent drama led by a complex and fascinating performance from Sandra Hüller (Toni Erdmann).
Saltburn
Emerald Fennell’s follow-up to Promising Young Woman (Oscar Winner for Best Original Screenplay) is a wicked, wildly entertaining tale of privilege and desire. Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin) continues to prove himself as a hot ticket on any billing as he takes on the role of a working-class student at Oxford University, who finds himself caught up with an eccentric, aristocratic family featuring Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant and Carey Mulligan in Saltburn (From Fri 17 Nov).
Napoleon
Ridley Scott’s new historical epic, Napoleon, sees Oscar Winner Joaquin Phoenix (The Joker) take on the titular role of Napoleon Bonaparte (From Fri 24 Nov). It has been over 20 years since Scott and Phoenix collaborated on Gladiator (2000) and if Phoenix’s Oscar nominated portrayal of Commodus is anything to go by, his turn as another tyrannical Emperor won’t be anything short of masterful.
French Film Festival UK
We’re thrilled to see the return of the French Film Festival UK to our screens for its 31st edition (Fri 3 Nov – Thu 16 Nov).
