Artist Call Out Gallery Late X Warwick Pride

Posted
Thursday 28 March 2024

Gallery Lates is an exciting, emerging programme at Warwick Arts Centre, where we bring together music, movement, visual art and much more in a free late-night event hosted inside our Mead Gallery.

Introduction:

Our first Gallery Late featured a talk from Jeremy Deller and a performance of his infamous Acid Brass project with Fairey Brass Band. Our second Gallery Late was delivered by psych-rock band BO NINGEN with individual  band members installed in different rooms of Katrina Palmer’s immersive exhibition What’s Already Going On

Then November 2023 saw the first of our open commissioned Gallery Late. The project recipient was Coventry-based sensory artist, Tom Simkins who paired DJ sets courtesy of his inclusive clubbing brand Cov Sauce with performances by ART RIOT COLLECTIVE (a community of Disabled and Neurodivergent artists and supporters) creating a captivating “Room 2” experience as a counterpart of Annie Mac’s ‘Before Midnight’ show inside our Hall.

The Brief:

Taking Warwick Pride, LGBTQIA+ culture and the themes from our exhibition as a springboard for creativity, we are commissioning an artist or group of artists, preferably from the West Midlands area, to deliver our next Gallery Late on Friday 14th June 2024 for a fee of £1,200 inclusive of VAT.

You might be makers, DJs, performers, a speaker, poet, workshop facilitator or a blend of all these things together. We welcome submissions from professional and non-professional practitioners.

Above all else, we value innovation, ambition and creativity so don’t hold back, we want to hear your bold ideas! However, please do also bear in mind that £1,200 is a modest budget and Warwick Arts Centre has firm commitments around fair pay for artists, so consider the number of performers you engage carefully with your submission.

Warwick Pride (Producer, Emily Smart)

This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of Warwick Pride on Friday 14th June. We will be putting on an extravaganza of events, that will showcase Drag, Cabaret, performances, workshops and much more with, by and from LGBTQIA+ artists and creatives.

This will be a joy filled day of celebration, with performances taking place across the Arts Centre, Student Union and Piazza, and we couldn’t be more excited! If you are an artist that identifies as part of the LGBTQIA+ community, we want to hear from you! Please complete an application of interest and send it our way – think about the gallery exhibition themes, how your performance would tie into a wider programme of Pride events and performances, and how we can assist you in realising your vision.

Exhibition Notes (Curator, Thomas Ellmer)

This Summer we present three concurrent exhibitions.

Francis Offman and Nicole Bachmann present their first solo exhibition in a UK gallery. Concerned with the experiences of migration, their work references their lived experiences as well as those of communities.

Essential Information

  • If shortlisted, you will need to be free on 29 or 30 April 2024 for a follow up 20-minute discussion with our team.
  • You will need to be free on Friday 14th June for the event itself. Please factor in plenty of time for set-up during the day.
  • You will need to be or be willing to register as Self-Employed, with a tax number.

Fee

There is a delivery fee of £1,200 inclusive of VAT in total for our Gallery Late event. This covers the artists’ research and preparation time, delivery of the event, and making/rehearsal time.

The budget must include the cost of any materials required to deliver the event as well as travel and accommodation where required.

On the day and leading up to the event, Warwick Arts Centre will provide event management, marketing, and technical support, as well as a PA system and special lighting to animate the area. We can also provide microphones, DI boxes, monitors, and a grand piano.

Unfortunately, we cannot provide DJ decks or items of backline unfortunately (e.g. drumkit, keyboards, guitar amps, and more.)

Please consider fair pay for artists within your plans.

Commitment to Equality, Diversity, Inclusion & Justice

“The power of the arts to delight, challenge, and inspire is the thing that will bridge gaps, heal division, and forge new connections between us.”

It’s a core part of our vision to ensure that we are open and accessible to everyone, this includes our audiences, artists and staff. We actively invite applications from those who are currently underrepresented in the arts and are happy to talk the application through with anyone who has access needs, has taken a different educational route or has identified any other barriers not here identified.

Coventry is a rich and diverse city; Warwick Arts Centre’s artists and programming should be representative of the people it serves.
