Tuesday 16 January 2024

We hosted dozens of big blockbusters and indie classics last year. Guess which were the most popular movies?

We screened some amazing films last year in our three lovely cinema screens - everything from big Hollywood blockbusters to art house flicks, the best of world cinema, special one-off screenings, and many movies you couldn't see anywhere else in Warwickshire on a big screen.

But which were the most popular?

Did Barbie drop a bomb on Oppenheimer? Could Napoleon conquer the Box Office? Has Wonka hit the sweet spot? And which superheroes really packed a punch?

Read on to discover the Top 10 most-watched movies at Warwick Arts Centre for 2023 (drum-roll please...)

  1. Oppenheimer (15)
Christopher Nolan's brooding biopic starring Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the 'father of the atomic bomb'.

  2. Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (PG)
Head-spinning and visually stunning animated sequel featuring the adventures of the alternative Spider-Man, Miles Morales.

  3. Barbie (12)
Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling embark on a journey of self-discovery in the feel-good movie of the year. Pink? So cool!

  4. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.3 (12)
Third time out for Marvel's galactic gang as Rocket's life hangs in the balance.

  5. Wonka (PG)
Musical fantasy starring Timothée Chalamet. The delightful cinematic prequel to Roald Dahl's Charlie and The Chocolate Factory was loved by families.

  6. Asteroid City (12)
Whimsical tale from Wes Anderson with an impressive starry cast, including Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson and Tom Hanks. Also the inspiration for a TikTok craze!

  7. Napoleon (15)
Director Ridley Scott's dramatic epic, with Joaquin Phoenix as the all-conquering French emperor.

  8. Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania (12)
Third outing for Paul Rudd as Marvel's smallest superhero.

  9. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (12)
Tom Cruise was back for his seventh stint as agent Ethan Hunt. Part two is due in 2025.

  10. Killers Of The Flower Moon (15)
Martin Scorsese’s masterpiece based on a series of brutal Native American murders during the early 20th century, with Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Golden Globe winner Lily Gladstone.

As we head into 2024, there'll be loads more great films coming your way including the double Golden Globe-winning The Holdovers (from Fri 19 Jan) and All Of Us Strangers (from Fri 26 Jan), which swept the British Independent Film Awards 2023, scooping seven awards including Best British Independent Film, Director and Screenplay.

February releases include the stereotype-challenging American Fiction; Cannes Film Festival prize winning wartime drama The Zone Of Interest; Zac Efron's wrestling biopic The Iron Claw; Jodie Cromer's environmental survival pic’ The End We Start From; French culinary romance The Taste Of Things; and black comedy Wicked Little Letters, with Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley. The month also sees the start of a run of Japanese films as part of the Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme.

There will also be a chance to catch up with some of the contenders for this year's Academy Awards and BAFTAs from March, plus a trio of Mystery Films around specific themes: Valentine’s (14 Feb), Family (3 Mar) and a Best Picture Oscar Winner From The Past (11 Mar).
