Wes Anderson Season

Posted
Tuesday 6 June 2023

This month we're celebrating the unique genius of writer/director Wes Anderson with a run of eight of his best films - including his latest release, Asteroid City.

The Wes Anderson Season kicks off with The Royal Tenenbaums (16 - 18 June), the movie-maker’s 2001 collaboration with former room-mate Owen Wilson starring Gene Hackman, Anjelica Houston, Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow and Bill Murray. Anderson's third film, it's the one that arguably established his reputation as a true original, combining beautifully observed and witty storytelling with a visual flair few can match.

Next, is 2004's The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou (19 - 21 June). Co-written with writer/director Noah Baumbach (Barbie, The Squid And The Whale), Bill Murray leads another starry cast as a Jacques Cousteau-esque oceanographer.

Runaway teens are at the centre of the island-set Moonrise Kingdom (20 - 22 June), while 1998’s Rushmore (17 - 19 June) presents a very different take on adolescence, as the teenage Max (Jason Schwartzman) attempts to fit in at school.

The season continues with the lauded The Grand Budapest Hotel (23 - 25 June), which earned Anderson four Academy Awards, five BAFTAs and a Golden Globe. As well as two beautifully animated adventures: 2018's Isle Of Dogs (26 - 29 June) and Fantastic Mr. Fox (24 - 25 June) - the latter adapted from the Roald Dahl book of the same name (and Anderson's second collaboration with Baumbach).

Finally, the programme culminates with Anderson's latest film, Asteroid City (23 June - 6 July). The Hollywood director's first foray into science fiction, the 1950s-set drama is a multi-layered visual (and cerebral) feast with Scarlett Johansson and Tom Hanks appearing alongside many familiar Anderson favourites, such as Jason Schwartzman. Elegant and eccentric, the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival where it received a standing ovation lasting more than six minutes.
