August 1715. On his return from a walk, King Louis XIV (Léaud) feels a sharp pain in his left leg and is confined to bed. Continuing his royal duties from his chambers, a team of doctors try to heal the Sun King but, when gangrene sets in, the situation becomes hopeless.
As plans are made for his succession, Louis succumbs to his slow agony, surrounded by his court and his faithful.
