Winner of the 2003 Sundance Grand Jury Prize, American Splendor is a quite brilliant, genre-bending groundbreaking film that mixes documentary and fiction to bring Harvey Pekar’s 1976 underground comic series to life.
Starring Paul Giamatti in an award-winning performance as the cynical, intellectual, and uncompromising file clerk, who documents his existence in comic book form.
The film explores the intersection of art and life as Harvey struggles through the banality of his existence in his Cleveland neighbourhood to find meaning and love in life. It’s a warm, sardonically funny and ultimately uplifting story about two depressives finding love among their neuroses - the ultimate anti-biopic.
Workshop
Before the screening, come along to Creative Socials for a chance to switch off, get creative and spend some time with other students. This workshop is free, no need to book, from 5:30pm-8pm.
Join illustrator and workshop facilitator Freyja for a playful comics workshop exploring the stories hidden in everyday life. Taking inspiration from comic artists and writers including Harvey Pekar and Alison Bechdel, you’ll explore how ordinary moments, routines and experiences can become compelling stories that connect with other people.
