When a Russian poet arrives to live and work in Tuscany, he finds himself beset by an intense yearning for his homeland. Perhaps more than any other Tarkovsky film, the semi-autobiographical Nostalghia is filled with extraordinary images, with nature, the elements of fire and water, music, painting and poetry all playing a major role in what becomes a contemplative work of pure cinema.
