Programme
SIBELIUS Karelia Suite
VAUGHAN WILLIAMS Concerto in A minor for Oboe and Strings
KODALY Song and Intermezzo from Háry János Suite
BARTOK Dance Suite
Conductor: Emilia Hoving
Oboe: John Roberts
An uplifting programme shaped by pastoral and folk themes, and rooted in a sense of place, from the RPO and Associate Conductor Emilia Hoving.
Sibelius' suite - named after an area on Finland’s border with Russia - presents a series of musical tableaux shaped by historic episodes, while Vaughan Williams' lyrical and melodic concerto, written during WWII, swells with a sense of nostalgia and longing.
Concluding the night are works by two Hungarians, both indebted to the folk music of their nation, with excerpts from Zoltán Kodály’s tale of swashbuckling dreamer Háry János, and Béla Bartók’s celebratory salute to Budapest's formation.
