Winton Marsalis: A Soldier's Story

Recommended Age:
Suitable for all

The Chineke! Chamber Ensemble present Wynton Marsalis' modern reinterpretation of Igor Stravinsky’s 1918 masterpiece, A Soldier's Story (L’Historie du soldat).

Premiered 80 years later, Marsalis’ A Fiddler’s Tale is composed from a later 20th century musical perspective, with the writer introducing elements from jazz, blues, tango, waltzes and rags into the classical gumbo.

Told by a special guest narrator, and accompanied by principal players from Chineke! Orchestra, the story follows a talented young fiddler, Beatrice, who makes a deal with the Devil.

Exploring themes of temptation, artistic integrity, and the corrupting power of fame, it’s a powerful parable for our starstruck times.
