TCHAIKOVSKY Piano Concerto No.1 in Bbminor, Op.23

Interval

MUSSORGSKY Pictures At An Exhibition

Conductor: Kazuki Yamada
Piano: Bruce Liu

Recommended Age:
Suitable for all. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

The CBSO’s Music Director, Kazuki Yamada, conducts two epic works.

Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1 had a rocky start. Initially dismissed by one of the composer’s friends, it was nonetheless a huge success and has since become one of the most famous pieces ever written for piano and orchestra. From the first movement’s pounding piano chords, it’s brimming with exuberance, contrasts and lyrical melodies.

Pictures At An Exhibition is fellow Russian Mussorgsky’s musical tribute to artist Viktor Hartmann, featuring a recurring promenade theme and a series of vivid, textured and imaginative musical depictions of 10 paintings as seen in a posthumous retrospective.
