Divine geometry subverted by wonkiness.Rewards for the Tribe is an ambitious collaborative dance work by leading Australian dance companies, Chunky Move and Restless Dance Theatre. Playing off notions of idealism in art history, the work asks, is there such a thing as utopia by design?
Five performers, with and without disability, wrestle with the archetype of divine geometry expressed in Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man, while interacting with subverted geometric forms in an environment that is both playful and uncompromising. Whimsical set and costume designs by Jonathon Oxlade both reference and topple the idealistic forms found in Mondrian’s 20th century minimalist Colour Composition Series. As images of so-called perfection collapse, bend, and crumple in an unpredictable dance between the ensemble and pliable objects, what is revealed is the need for collaboration, creativity, and the time-honoured ritual of image making to make sense of a world that is wonky.
Rewards for the Tribe celebrates the imaginations of artists while embracing life’s exquisite chaos.
