Lighting the Way: Warwick Arts Centre’s Sustainable Technology Upgrades
Warwick Arts Centre shares news of its sustainable technology upgrades.
At Warwick Arts Centre, sustainability is not just an aspiration, it is built into the way we operate every day. One of our most significant recent steps has been a complete upgrade of our theatre and studio lighting systems, replacing traditional tungsten fixtures with state-of-the-art LED technology. Alongside this, we have also invested in rechargeable battery systems for our Axient Digital radio microphones, further reducing waste and improving efficiency.
Why LED?
For decades, tungsten lighting has been a staple of the theatre world, but it comes at a cost. Tungsten fixtures consume large amounts of electricity, generate excess heat, and require frequent lamp replacements, each one contributing to landfill.
By contrast, LED fixtures are far more energy efficient, use significantly less power, and last for many years before needing replacement. For Warwick Arts Centre, this means:
- Lower environmental impact: Reduced energy consumption and fewer carbon emissions.
- Less waste: No more disposal of specialist tungsten lamps or single-use lighting gels.
- Greater flexibility: A broader range of colour and creative options available instantly from each fixture.
- Operational savings: Lower running costs and reduced maintenance, freeing up time for the team to focus on supporting artists and productions.
Choosing the Right Fixtures
This project was about more than just sustainability; it was also about making sure our stages continue to meet the highest creative standards. Mark Smith, Head of Lighting at Warwick Arts Centre, led the process of testing and comparing a range of manufacturers through detailed demonstrations. His careful evaluation ensured we selected fixtures that not only meet our environmental goals but also give us the artistic flexibility required for world-class theatre.
Beyond Lighting: Smarter Sound
Sustainability at Warwick Arts Centre goes beyond lighting. Our recent investment in rechargeable battery systems for our Shure Axient Digital radio microphones has eliminated the need for single-use AA batteries. The switch to lithium-ion rechargeable packs means each battery can be recharged thousands of times, reducing waste dramatically. In addition, the system provides precise battery-level monitoring from the racks, giving our technicians full oversight during performances and ensuring a seamless experience for audiences.
A Sustainable Step Forward
For the technical team, these changes are transformative. As Tim Clare, Technical Manager at Warwick Arts Centre, explains:
“This upgrade represents a huge step forward for us, both environmentally and operationally. By moving to LED and rechargeable systems, we are not only reducing our energy usage and cutting down on waste, but also improving the quality and reliability of our technical services. Sustainability has to be built into every part of our work, and these projects show how the right investment can make a real difference.”
Part of a Bigger Picture
Both the LED conversion and the rechargeable battery initiative form part of Warwick Arts Centre’s wider commitment to reducing its environmental impact. From improving building systems to monitoring energy use and recycling wherever possible, our goal is to create outstanding experiences for audiences while supporting a greener future for the arts.
By choosing sustainable technologies, Warwick Arts Centre is not just upgrading equipment, we are lighting the way towards a more responsible, resilient, and environmentally conscious future.
