5 Cinema  Highlights for  May 2024

Wednesday 1 May 2024

We can’t quite believe May is here and as much as we keep willing for sunshine, it doesn’t seem to be happening. However, one thing you can be sure of is superb cinema in our screens whatever the weather. Here are 5 highlights for May:

Love Lies Bleeding

From Saint Maud director Rose Glass comes electric love story, Love Lies Bleeding (From Fri 3 May). Love, lust and crime become entangled in this heart pounding story of a reclusive gym manager and a bodybuilder who is passing through her small town heading for the bright lights of Las Vegas. A complete rush with a killer 80s vibe. A must see!

Kidnapped

From veteran Italian filmmaker Marco Bellocchio, Kidnapped (From Fri 10 May) brings to life a true story lifted from the pages of a shocking history. A six-year-old Jewish boy is taken from his family by the Catholic Church amid claims he was baptised in this gripping portrait of a Jewish community in turmoil.

La Chimera

Josh O’Connor plays a melancholy tomb-robber in Alice Rohrwacher’s La Chimera (From Fri 17 May), a captivating fable of love and treasure. La Chimera is a wild, sweet ode to the power and fragility of lovely things, and a cautionary tale about how easily they may be lost with a wonderful performance from O’Connor.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

George Miller returns to the driving seat in the next instalment of his dystopian saga, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (From Fri 24 May). Anya Taylor-Joy takes on Furiosa’s origin story in this high-octane action adventure that sees her battle through many trials to find her way home.

Trainspotting

Choose… Trainspotting (From Mon 27 May). Danny Boyle’s supercharged British classic returns to the big screen in spectacular 4K. This adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s seminal novel about young heroin addicts in Edinburgh still feels fresh almost 30 years after its release with an early career standout performance from Ewan McGregor.
