Here’s your guide to mastering Open Mic nights and growing your audience!

What is an Open Mic night?

An Open Mic night is your opportunity to share your talents and to listen as a community. It’s not just a space for speech or song; it’s a platform for creativity! Whether it’s your first time facing the crowd or you’re a regular around the microphone, Open Mic nights are for everyone.

To discover what Open Mic nights here at Warwick Arts Centre are all about, we’ve interviewed Prav Peiris, the Student Lead of Open Mic night.

Open Mic nights are a popular activity across the region, but Prav says what makes this event unique is how it combines a welcoming environment with a professional set-up. “[It can be] competitive at other Open Mics, whereas this is more a collaboration and a community, you go up and tell a story.”

This positive energy he describes is what is key to this event, the relaxed environment that provides a friendly, entry-level platform for performers.

How do I prepare for an Open Mic night?

Prav has been performing at Open Mic nights for years, not just here at Warwick, but also in his hometown. Here are his three top tips for anyone new to the scene:

  • “Bring your talent” – just be your authentic self! There is no cookie-cutter for an Open Mic night performance, it is a space to explore your skills and creativity, whatever form that takes. You could try singing, playing an instrument (such as the piano at the Arts Centre), voicing poetry, or sharing your comedy stylings.
  • “Don’t be nervous, it’s a really safe space.” Nerves are completely natural, but remember, this event is a supportive environment full of like-minded people. Once you have some experience, it’s also the perfect opportunity to test your comfort zone by trying something new!
  • Get comfortable by trying a cover! If you are looking to sing but are feeling nervous, start out by singing the songs you love. You can always use a karaoke track!

What are the benefits of Open Mic nights?

Open Mic nights are what you make of it: a time to relax, to boost your confidence as a performer, to practice your skill, or to be part of a creative community. It’s a non-intimidating space that allows you to demonstrate your unique skills and passion, so you can enjoy being yourself!
